Television’s biggest night delivered a mix of expected triumphs and a breakout sweep. At the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, held on September 14 at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles and hosted by Mariska Hargitay, The Pitt won Outstanding Drama Series while Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay dominated the comedy categories.
The headline winners
- Drama Series: The Pitt (HBO Max)
- Comedy Series: Widow’s Bay (Apple TV)
- Limited or Anthology Series: DTF St. Louis (HBO)
1. Widow’s Bay is the comedy of the year
No show had a better night. Widow’s Bay collected six major awards and 14 Emmys in total once the Creative Arts ceremonies are included. Matthew Rhys won Lead Actor in a Comedy, Stephen Root took Supporting Actor and Kate O’Flynn won Supporting Actress — an ensemble sweep that signals deep support across the Television Academy’s voting branches.
2. Matthew Rhys had a historic double
Rhys did not stop at comedy. He also won Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for The Beast in Me, making him one of the rare performers to win two lead acting Emmys in different categories on the same night.
3. The Pitt confirms its status
The medical drama’s win for Outstanding Drama Series was paired with Noah Wyle’s Lead Actor award, rewarding a show praised for its real-time structure and portrayal of emergency medicine under pressure.
4. Veterans still rule the acting races
Jean Smart won Lead Actress in a Comedy for Hacks, Sally Field took Lead Actress in a Limited Series for Remarkably Bright Creatures, and Allison Janney won Supporting Actress in a Drama for The Diplomat. Rhea Seehorn was named Lead Actress in a Drama for Pluribus, and Tom Pelphrey won Supporting Actor in a Drama for Task.
5. Streaming and premium cable split the spoils
Between HBO, HBO Max and Apple TV, the top prizes were shared among platforms that have invested heavily in prestige programming. The results underline how awards attention remains concentrated among a small group of services even as audiences fragment.
